The Daily Journal.- The two powerful earthquakes that struck several regions of Venezuela on June 24 caused structural damage to homes, buildings and public spaces. Caracas, one of the hardest-hit cities after La Guaira, woke up to cracked walls and ceilings and buckled floors.
More than two months after the earthquakes, thousands of families still wonder: How much does it cost to repair an apartment or a house? And, more importantly, which materials offer the best options without breaking the budget?
The Daily Journal researched current prices for basic repair and reconstruction materials.
The cost of materials
To understand the scale of the expense, homeowners first need to consider the prices of basic supplies at hardware stores across Caracas. According to reports from merchants and online marketplaces, these were estimated prices in August 2026.
A bag of cement costs between $8 and $12, depending on the brand and availability. A 1/2-inch x 6-meter rebar rod costs between $6 and $10 per unit, with prices linked to Sidor’s rates. A 15-centimeter concrete block costs between $0.50 and $0.70 per unit.
Sand prices also vary depending on availability, transportation costs, and grain-size classification. A cubic meter of washed yellow sand starts at $25, while the final price depends on the distance from the quarry; crushed stone or coarse aggregate costs around $30 per cubic meter.
Other construction materials include 6 x 6 welded wire mesh covering 40 square meters, which costs between $100 and $130 depending on the standard gauge used for concrete slabs.
For finishing work, a 20-kilogram bag of stucco costs between $7 and $15. Ceramic tile prices vary by quality and design, starting at around $10 per square meter. A gallon of paint can cost between $15 and $30, depending on quality, color, and brand.
These prices are estimates and may vary by hardware store, location, and product quality. Consumers should compare prices at several stores before buying.
How much does it cost to repair an apartment?
In Venezuela, construction estimates for basic unfinished structures generally allocate about 60% of the total cost to materials and 40% to labor.
For repairs, the final cost depends on the size of the damaged area, the type of materials homeowners choose, and whether they hire workers. Repairing superficial or minor cracks in a 12-square-meter room can cost an estimated $400 to $500.
According to Bloomberg, a resident of San Bernardino, one of the Caracas parishes affected by the earthquakes, spent between $600 and $1,000 to repair and reinforce 13 walls in his home.
The most common repairs require rebar, cement, stucco, sand, paint, and even bags of debris. More extensive repairs may also require concrete blocks, welding electrodes, and other construction materials.
According to sources consulted for this report, construction costs for social housing range from $450 to $600 per square meter, while homes with luxury finishes can exceed $1,200 per square meter.
The construction materials market: between supply and speculation
Venezuela’s hardware sector says it has enough capacity to meet the demand that the emergency has generated. Bruno Saglimbeni, president of the National Hardware Chamber, said that “all cement plants are currently operating.” He added that rebar production is also operating normally.
The industry group ruled out shortages of essential products such as rebar, cement, electrical systems and paint.
However, prices tell a different story. Reports from the affected areas indicate that a bag of gray cement, which cost between $8.50 and $11 before the two earthquakes, has seen significant price increases.
The situation raised concerns and even prompted the national government to review cement prices after reports showed prices ranging from $32 to $37 per bag in some parts of the country.
To reduce the impact on the population, the national government introduced extraordinary measures through Decree No. 5,376. It temporarily halted exports of 126 categories of construction materials through the end of the year to prioritize domestic emergency needs.
Community initiatives have also emerged, including a sheet-metal factory operated by the Commonwealth of Communes in Acevedo, Miranda state, which offers cement for $10 and zinc roofing sheets at affordable prices for affected families.
