The Daily Journal.- The Andean Parliament unanimously approved a declaration recognizing the Lord of Miracles festival and procession, which features an image of the crucified Christ that travels through the streets of Peru every October, as Intangible Cultural and Religious Heritage of the Andean region. The organization’s Peruvian delegation announced the decision on Wednesday.

Maali Del Pomar, the Peruvian vice president of the Andean Parliament, introduced the initiative to grant regional recognition to the country’s most important religious celebration. According to a press release, devotion to the Lord of Miracles has crossed borders and remains alive in more than 22 countries.

Peru has recognized the tradition as part of its Cultural Heritage since 2005, and the organization described it as “an expression of faith, identity, and connection among communities.”

Del Pomar will present the resolution to the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles on Sunday, October 18, during the image’s second procession through Lima’s historic center, an annual event that draws thousands of participants.

Through this declaration, the Andean Parliament seeks to promote appreciation for a tradition that, according to the organization, strengthens ties among the region’s peoples, reinforces integration through faith, and recognizes religious tourism as a driver of development and regional integration.

The full Andean Parliament approved the decision during its regular sessions in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, the Peruvian Episcopal Conference entrusted Pope Leo XIV’s health and recovery to the Lord of Miracles following reports that he had undergone surgery to remove a lung nodule that proved cancerous. The reports emerged weeks before his announced tour of Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.
