The Daily Journal.— Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced Thursday that a specialized technical team from Israel has joined the effort to assess buildings damaged by the earthquakes that struck on June 24.
During a press conference with international media, Rodríguez explained that the Jewish community in Venezuela contacted the group, which has already begun coordinating its work with national authorities.
“We have here at this moment a highly professional and specialized team from Israel that the Jewish community in Venezuela contacted,” she said.
According to Rodríguez, the specialists will begin protocols to determine the condition of buildings that remain standing but have suffered structural damage that could threaten their stability.
She added that the team also has the technical capability to determine whether survivors or human remains are trapped inside structures before authorities begin infrastructure recovery operations.
“This specialized team can determine whether people are still alive in a specific location or whether we must recover bodies before beginning any other infrastructure process,” she said.
Rodríguez described the contingent as a team with “the highest level of training and professionalism” and said its participation will help authorities move into a new phase of the emergency response.
In the same briefing, she reported that more than 19,000 civilian and military personnel remain deployed in La Guaira to respond to the emergency and continue operations at the 189 structures that collapsed during the earthquakes.
She also said that international brigades from 33 countries are supporting the response efforts and that authorities have rescued 6,462 people alive since the emergency began.
