The proposal aims to promote the scientific, technological and productive development of the Global South
The Daily Journal.- Science and Technology Minister Yván Gil Pinto led Venezuela’s delegation at the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where he proposed strengthening international nuclear cooperation and advocated equitable access to the peaceful uses of atomic energy to reduce gaps among nations.
During the meeting in Vienna, Gil highlighted that Venezuela is undergoing a period of economic expansion that requires greater scientific and technological capabilities. For this reason, he proposed expanding nuclear cooperation in strategic areas such as agriculture, energy, industry, nuclear medicine and advanced diagnostics.
He also highlighted the potential of these technologies for water resource management, environmental protection, food security and cancer treatment.
In his remarks, he reaffirmed Venezuela’s commitment to the non-proliferation regime, IAEA safeguards and nuclear disarmament.
Democratizing access to nuclear technology
The minister warned about the concentration of nuclear knowledge and capabilities among a small group of countries. He therefore advocated greater democratization of access to technology, specialized training, infrastructure and financing.
Finally, the minister expressed Venezuela’s interest in assessing advances in next-generation reactors. He said the country will closely follow these developments as an alternative to complement its energy capabilities within the international regulatory framework.
