The Daily Journal.- Acting President Delcy Rodríguez held an official meeting in Caracas with a delegation from London. Colin Dick, the UK chargé d’affaires, led the delegation.
The bilateral meeting marked progress toward fully restoring relations between the two countries. In addition, both governments agreed to raise their diplomatic representation to the ambassadorial level.
Rodríguez posted a video on social media showing part of her meeting with the British chargé d’affaires and thanked him for supporting efforts to ensure that Caracas and London “have diplomatic relations.”
“I thanked him for his willingness and support throughout this process of resuming diplomatic relations between our two countries. Understanding and cooperation provide the path toward building new stages of closer ties and joint efforts,” Rodríguez said in a message accompanying the video.
Recovery of the gold held in London
On August 12, the Rodríguez administration and the 2015 National Assembly agreed to focus their efforts on recovering Venezuela’s gold assets held at the Bank of England.
The two sides agreed to a first round of negotiations between the government and a sector of the opposition, with support from the United States. The roadmap calls for recovering the funds under strict standards of transparency, traceability and auditing.
Negotiators said they aim to ensure efficient management of the resources to address the economic and social needs of people affected by the earthquakes.
