The Daily Journal — Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced on Monday the appointment of economist Johann Álvarez Márquez as Venezuela’s new Chargé d’Affaires to the United States.
In her announcement, the head of state said the new envoy has “the mission of representing our country’s interests and advancing this new stage of dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect by promoting a relationship grounded in international law and understanding between both nations.”
Since March of this year, Álvarez had served as Minister of Foreign Trade. In recent hours, however, the government announced a cabinet restructuring. Authorities merged the Foreign Trade Ministry with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, creating a unified ministry led by diplomat Félix Plasencia.
As part of the reshuffle, Álvarez Márquez will fill the Washington vacancy left by Plasencia. Until now, the new Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade had led Venezuela’s relations with the United States following Nicolás Maduro’s capture, overseeing the technical and political communication channels established with the U.S. administration during this period of institutional transition.
