The Daily Journal.- Acting President Delcy Rodríguez on Wednesday welcomed the first agreement reached in the dialogue process between her administration and the National Assembly elected in 2015.
“I welcome and celebrate this first step in the dialogue process with the opposition sector represented in the National Assembly elected in 2015,” Rodríguez said in a message following the conclusion of the first round of talks.
The acting president expressed hope that the process would help “build a path toward better democratic coexistence among the country’s different political sectors.”
Her remarks came shortly after delegations led by lawmaker Jorge Rodríguez and opposition leader Dinorah Figuera announced the conclusion of the first round of talks, which included five working sessions and five plenary meetings.
Among the agreements, both sides committed to pursuing the recovery of Venezuela’s international reserve assets held at the Bank of England through mechanisms that ensure “transparency, traceability and auditing,” with the goal of allocating the funds to assist victims of the June 24 double earthquake.
The negotiating parties also agreed to launch a process to transform the justice system. The plan includes reforms to the Organic Law of the Supreme Court of Justice, the renewal and expansion of the Judicial Nominations Committee, and a new process to nominate and appoint all justices to the country’s highest court.
Rodríguez called for broader participation in the process: “I call on all political forces to join this dialogue, always putting the well-being, peace, stability and development of Venezuela first,” she said.
