The Daily Journal — Government authorities announced the completion of rehabilitation work at 239 educational institutions in La Guaira state as part of preparations for the start of the new academic year following the earthquakes that struck last June.
La Guaira Governor José Alejandro Terán provided the figures during remarks broadcast by state-run television channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
“Starting Monday, a total of 239 educational institutions in La Guaira will reopen in excellent condition following rehabilitation work,” Terán said.
Education Minister Héctor Rodríguez, meanwhile, shared an information bulletin through his official Telegram channel, stressing the need to prioritize psychosocial support and safety at schools in response to the impact of the earthquakes.
“This school year, it is especially important to create a caring environment that meets children’s needs. A respectful and protective environment is key to a new beginning, given the circumstances our country experienced as a result of the two earthquakes that struck on June 24,” the education minister said.
On infrastructure, Rodríguez stressed that authorities must continue conducting periodic assessments of school buildings, while noting that “officials have progressively carried out the inspection process following the earthquake” across the affected areas.
According to official figures, more than 1,000 schools sustained minor, moderate or severe damage following the two earthquakes.
The earthquakes killed at least 6,509 people, caused moderate damage to 14,239 homes, and severely damaged 11,001 homes, according to the latest official report, released on August 24, two months after the tragedy.
