The Daily Journal.— Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez held a bilateral meeting on Monday with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting took place in a cordial diplomatic atmosphere. It primarily aimed to resume discussions that the two leaders initiated during an earlier round of technical talks in Caracas, where they laid the groundwork for more fluid dialogue on the international financial architecture.

During the exchange, both officials reviewed Venezuela’s progress toward economic stabilization, comparing current macroeconomic challenges with the technical recommendations they discussed during their previous meeting in Venezuela. President Rodríguez expressed her interest in promoting economic diversification and keeping inflation indicators under control.

According to international media reports, the meeting also addressed Venezuela’s access to the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs).

Reports also indicated that Rodríguez announced the formal restoration of Venezuela’s representation at the IMF as part of the resumption of relations between Caracas and the organization, which both parties officially announced in April of this year after several years of severed ties.

Rodríguez’s visit to New York also included meetings with other international economic officials, including Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Ilan Goldfajn and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, as part of an agenda to strengthen Venezuela’s financial ties.

The meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly allowed both leaders to move beyond technical discussions and use diplomacy as their primary tool to bridge differences, foster mutual understanding, and promote positive relations throughout the region.
