The Daily Journal — Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced the launch of a direct financial assistance program for families directly affected by the June 24 earthquakes.
“We have also decided to launch the financing program immediately, providing monthly assistance over the next six months to ensure a steady source of emergency income for those most severely affected,” Rodríguez said.
The twin earthquakes damaged 856 buildings and destroyed 190 others. The hardest-hit area was La Guaira state, on Venezuela’s north-central coast.
According to the official report released on Sunday, July 5, the disaster has left 17,345 people displaced.
Rodríguez also announced the creation of a fund called “Venezuela Renace” (“Venezuela Reborn”), which will support the reconstruction and recovery of the areas affected by the twin earthquakes.
“Most importantly, the fund will provide immediate assistance to people who are enduring profound grief after losing family members, homes, and other property,” she added.
The acting president said the fund will draw on “money currently blocked at the International Monetary Fund and other financial institutions around the world.”
