The Daily Journal — The Central University of Venezuela (UCV) will host the panel discussion “Testimonies of Solidarity: What Has Changed in the Country?” on Wednesday, July 29. The event will examine the social impact of the earthquakes that struck on June 24 and encourage reflection on the role of community support networks during the national emergency.
The School of Sociology, the School of History, and the “Father Luis María Olaso” Office for Peace and Human Rights organized the event. It will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Rector’s Plaza at UCV, in the covered area next to the University Clock.
Organizers said the panel will serve as a space for listening, collective memory, and critical analysis. Participants will discuss the changes Venezuelan society has experienced since the disaster and the challenges that lie ahead in the recovery process.
According to the organizers, the mobilization of thousands of volunteers during the emergency highlighted new forms of solidarity and community organization. They also stressed that the disaster’s lasting consequences make it essential to address the country’s structural challenges.
“Sharing memories and personal testimonies so we can recognize ourselves as a society at this moment has become essential in the face of the country’s economic hardship and institutional weaknesses,” the organizers said.
The discussion will focus on three main topics: the needs facing the volunteer sector after the emergency, the relationship among solidarity, social protection, and democracy, and the challenges of social reconstruction and support for earthquake survivors.
Students, faculty members, survivors, volunteers, and the general public may attend the event. Organizers aim to encourage the exchange of experiences and promote reflection on the social changes that followed the earthquakes.
