Kristalina Georgieva confirmed the decision after meeting with Delcy Rodríguez in New York

The Daily Journal.- International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed Monday that the organization will open an office in Venezuela during the first half of 2027, establishing a permanent presence in the country.

Georgieva announced to Bloomberg News after meeting with acting President Delcy Rodríguez on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

When asked about the possibility, Georgieva replied, “It will happen.” She also said the IMF could open an office in Caracas “sometime in the first half of next year.”

The IMF’s decision to open an office in the Venezuelan capital provides the clearest confirmation yet of the Washington-based organization’s plans to establish a permanent presence in the country. The announcement comes five months after Venezuela formally resumed relations with the IMF in April 2026 under Rodríguez’s interim administration.

Senior IMF officials traveled to Caracas in late July for the first time in more than two decades, followed by a broader IMF staff mission. “Now we are making sure we catch up quickly on key data and monetary and fiscal policies,” Georgieva said.

Rodríguez also held meetings with representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank. The South American nation seeks to restore ties with international financial institutions as it moves forward with its economic stabilization process.
