The Daily Journal .- U.S. airline JetBlue formally announced its intention to establish a direct connection between the United States and Venezuela through a new route linking Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía.
The announcement marks a milestone for the company, representing its first operational entry into the Venezuelan market, according to a company statement.
The launch of this commercial route remains subject to the completion of the corresponding regulatory procedures before aviation authorities in both countries.
“The proposed route remains subject to receipt of government approval and completion of applicable processes to operate in Venezuela,” the company’s corporate report stated. JetBlue expects to begin operations before the end of the current year and place tickets on sale in the coming months.
Focus on the Diaspora and Regional Connectivity
The airline projects that the new air link will address significant pent-up passenger demand in South Florida, a region home to one of the largest Venezuelan immigrant communities in the United States. The company aims to position the flight as a convenient option both for family reunification travel and for business connections through the rest of its network.
Dave Jehn, JetBlue’s Vice President of Network Planning and Airline Partnerships, justified the strategic decision based on the geographic positioning of the airline’s Florida operations hub.
“Fort Lauderdale continues to serve as JetBlue’s gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America, and we believe there is meaningful opportunity to expand our presence in the region with planned service to Caracas,” the executive explained.
“South Florida is home to a large Venezuelan community, and this new route would help connect families and loved ones with JetBlue’s competitive fares and award-winning service,” he added.
The route will be operated using Airbus A320 aircraft and, according to the company, onboard service will maintain JetBlue’s standard international-flight experience, including individual entertainment systems, complimentary snacks, and its Fly-Fi® wireless connectivity platform.
Consolidation of Operations in Florida
The addition of Caracas forms part of a broader expansion plan being executed by JetBlue at its Fort Lauderdale hub, where the airline recently restructured its summer service offerings with the goal of reaching nearly 130 daily departures .
This growth strategy includes the addition of 11 new international destinations and increased frequencies on existing routes throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, consolidating Fort Lauderdale as one of the most important connection hubs in the company’s transportation strategy across the Americas.
