After several days of rumors circulating on social media, messaging apps, and some digital outlets claiming that Alexander Enrique Granko Arteaga had been detained, disappeared, or even extradited to the United States, the controversial Venezuelan official reappeared publicly during an official event led by Delcy Rodríguez in Anzoátegui state.
Videos and images released from the eastern region show Granko accompanying the high-ranking government official during an official visit. His public presence appears to dispel, at least for now, the versions circulating in recent days about a possible fall from grace within Venezuela’s state security structures.
One of the most noticeable aspects was his changed physical appearance. Granko appeared without the characteristic beard that had formed part of his public image for years, showing a different look from what he is usually known for. He also wore a striking red jacket that contrasted with the rest of the attendees and quickly sparked comments on social media, where many users highlighted his new appearance.
The reappearance comes amid intense national and international controversy surrounding his figure. Various human rights organizations, Western governments, and investigative media outlets have identified Granko Arteaga as one of the most controversial figures within Venezuela’s security apparatus.
The colonel of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM) has been subject to sanctions by the United States and the European Union since 2019. Washington has included him among officials accused of alleged human rights violations and involvement in political repression against opponents of the Venezuelan government.
His name also appears in reports by the United Nations Independent International
Fact-Finding Mission, which documented allegations of arbitrary detention, torture, and cruel treatment attributed to Venezuelan security agencies. Various testimonies collected by international investigators identify Granko as an influential figure within the operational structure of the DGCIM.
Among the most well-known cases linked to international allegations is the death in custody of Corvette Captain Rafael Acosta Arévalo in 2019. Human rights organizations have stated that military counterintelligence officials were involved in the events during his detention.
More recently, Granko Arteaga’s name has appeared in investigations by the Chilean Public
Prosecutor’s Office related to the kidnapping and murder of former Venezuelan lieutenant Ronald Ojeda in Santiago. Although there has been no judicial conviction against him in this case and investigations remain ongoing, Chilean authorities have mentioned his name within lines of inquiry.
His public appearance alongside Delcy Rodríguez sends an important political signal. Far from confirming rumors of an alleged arrest or removal within the government structure, the images suggest that he continues to be part of the circle of officials with access to high-level state activities.
Meanwhile, the allegations made by international organizations, foreign governments, and human rights groups continue to weigh on his figure. The Venezuelan government has repeatedly rejected these accusations, describing them as part of political campaigns against its institutions.
For now, Granko Arteaga’s appearance in Anzoátegui seems to have put an end to a week of speculation, rumors, and conflicting reports about his whereabouts, although the debate about his role within Venezuela’s state security structure remains open both inside and outside the country.
