The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela issued an official statement on Sunday, firmly rejecting remarks by the Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana regarding a potential ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Guyana’s unilateral claim.

In the statement, which Foreign Minister Yván Gil published on Instagram, Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry described Georgetown’s actions as “an open and clear violation of the 1966 Geneva Agreement and international law.”

Venezuela also reaffirmed its longstanding position that the parties must not submit the territorial dispute to international judicial bodies without their mutual consent.
