The Daily Journal. — Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, returned to the country on Thursday after participating in the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“We arrived from New York a few hours ago after participating in the United Nations General Assembly. Our delegation is happy to have accomplished its mission,” Rodríguez said in a video shared on social media.
The interim president said she went directly to review government affairs with her brother, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez; Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello; and Vice President for Administrative Affairs and Digital Government Anabel Pereira.
Her return coincides with the conclusion of the second round of U.S.-brokered talks between the ruling Chavista movement and a faction of the opposition.
In addition to addressing the UN General Assembly, Rodríguez met with Donald Trump eight months after the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and the detention of Nicolás Maduro.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the meeting as “brief but important.” He said the discussions focused on restructuring Venezuela’s debt and laying the groundwork for a political transition.
Rodríguez also held talks with Chilean President José Antonio Kast; Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, with whom she opened a new chapter in diplomatic relations; and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.
She also met with officials from the World Bank (WB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
