The Daily Journal.- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denounced on Friday that the United States is replicating in Iran the same pressure tactics it previously used against Nicolás Maduro’s government in order to secure control over energy resources.
The statements were made during a press conference, reported by the EFE news agency, within the framework of the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting.
“During the actions of the United States against Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro was accused of being involved in drug trafficking. Later it turned out that this was not about drug trafficking at all, but rather that the U.S. was interested in Venezuelan oil,” the Russian diplomat stated.
For Lavrov, Washington’s logic in the Middle East responds to similar interests, directly linking tensions in the Strait of Hormuz to global energy supplies.
“Now the presence of Russian oil is becoming apparent, which supposedly should flow through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
Likewise, Lavrov absolved Tehran of responsibility for the current maritime crisis in the Persian Gulf, attributing the instability to the military offensive launched by the United States and Israel on February 28.
“It was not Iran that created this problem, even in relations with its neighbors, the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council,” he told reporters.
The Russian foreign minister also launched harsh criticism against the interference of Western powers in international affairs, accusing them of fragmenting global stability through the use of coercive measures.
