The Daily Journal — The death toll from the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 4,118, according to the latest report presented by National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez.
The official report also lists 16,740 people injured and at least 17,907 residents whose homes suffered damage or collapsed, primarily in the coastal state of La Guaira.
Seismic activity continued with a magnitude-3 aftershock, prompting authorities to order a precautionary evacuation of several buildings in El Rosal, Caracas’ financial district.
Although local authorities have not updated the number of people still missing, United Nations estimates indicate that as many as 50,000 people could remain unaccounted for.
In response, the executive branch requested the release of Venezuelan assets held abroad, while the United Nations launched a $300 million humanitarian fundraising campaign to support relief efforts.
